Built to Last

I have been admiring this staircase, constructed of soapstone, and the classic windsor chairs during my many visits over the course of the last year as Tabula created a new website for the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Nearly all of the original furniture in the building is made of metal, finished to mimic wood as a fireproofing precaution, including the windsor chairs shown here. Lead hangers that will melt in a fire also retain steel fire doors in the jamb shown that will slam shut in the event of a fire. Additional history on this historic building and the organization's collections can be found on their website, which includes an online exhibit on the history of the structure.
