Clementines are a hybrid mandarin orange said to have been created by Father Clement Rodier in the garden of his orphanage in Algeria in 1902. These petit oranges appear in markets beginning in November through January and come from Spain, Morocco and, of course, California.

I recall encountering my first clementine in the toe of my Christmas stocking as a child along with a traditional crabapple or two, so they will always be Christmas oranges to me.
