On Saturday we attended the Smallholding Festival in Ottsville with some friends. Put on by the taste-makers at Canal House, the first-annual festival celebrated efforts at being self sufficient in one's own backyard, from composting and organic vegetable production to raising chickens and pickling. Amidst the stunning gardens at Linden Hill and surrounding its historic stone barn here were a lot of interesting displays, demonstrations, food, animals and even a nomadic wood-fired pizza oven on a vintage truck. Where else can you learn to make kimchi, forage for mushrooms, pick up an exotic echinacea specimen plant and get free advice on raising eggs at home? We're already looking forward to next year.
